Being your own boss is a great experience. It is liberating and it seems like a dream come true for many people. However, being your own boss is also a lot of responsibility and something that some people may struggle with. When it comes to working at home there are many myths and misconceptions out there. Many times these myths and misconceptions make people decide against working at home. They also can be harmful because they lead people to believe that working at home is something that it is not. A lot of the time people believe these things without even finding out if they are true or legitimate. 1. Working at home means complete freedom. This is not completely true. While it has some truth to it, it is also a little misleading. The idea that a person is completely free when working at home does not make a lot of sense. The reason it is called working at home is because it involves work. If a person were truly free they would not have any work to do. So, working at home does give a person freedom, but at the same time it is still important to remember there is also time that must go into working.

Working at home is no piece of cake. Most people understand that, but they do not really get why it can be so challenging. Outlined here are the five biggest challenges to working at home. These challenges will not stop a person from working at home but can cause a lot of problems and ruin any chance for making it in the work at home environment.

Time

There is a lot of freedom when working at home and that means being able to manage time efficiently is very important. It can be easy to let time get away. It is also easy to underestimate how long a task or job will take and not allot enough time to get it done. To keep time from being a challenge a person should develop a schedule and be sure to schedule both work and free time.

Challenge #2
Boundaries

Many times family and friends do not take working at home seriously which can lead to problems with boundaries. It can be hard to tell someone 'I am working' and actually get them to understand and accept it. To help with boundary issues a person should set up a work at home area that is specifically for work. When in the work area no personal phones calls or interruptions should be tolerated.

Too much independence

Working at home is about freedom, but being too independent can lead to problems. Everyone needs interaction with others. One of the perks of working outside the home is interacting with other people. When a person works at home it can be easy to withdraw into that world and forget about the outside world. The outside world is important, though. Networking is huge part of working at home success. Every person who works at home should find some type of online environment to belong to and be able to escape to during the work day just to relax.

This kind of goes with independence. Being out of the loop means not staying informed. Working at home is about staying informed and knowing what is going on in the industry in which you are working. As mentioned before, sometimes family and friends will not be supportive. It is common for them to not believe a person is really working and that they are just messing around. New business opportunities present themselves nearly every day and a person in desperate need of a job and income often overlook many of the warming signs that the latest business idea is a really bad one. The first sign of a really bad business idea will be a rather lengthy sales pitch that never really says anything. In order to make money from an online business, you have to sell some type of product or service. Read the sales pitch again, and if you cannot figure out what it is you are being asked to sell, close the page and move on. Even if there are specific products or services you will be promoting, consider who would want them, the price at which you will be selling them and are they real.

There is little question that information is big on the internet and many people are lining up with cash in hand to buy information. However, most will want information that will help them in some aspect of their life. Selling a book distributed only online advising people how to make money online does not have much of a following, even those books with the phrase "...For Dummies" in the title are an invitation to send money for something that common sense should make obvious.

Another hint that a proposal is a bad idea is the amount of money you will need to spend up front to become part of a professional organization. Franchising has been around almost forever, and there is a valid reason for companies to charge to become a qualified distributor for their company. They have a hefty investment in their operational game plan as well as the internet infrastructure for which investments in new distributors help offset. However, if the investment seems too high, you will want to research how much you can expect to make and how long it will take to earn your investment back before you start earning a profit.

Buying into the secrets of internet riches or learning how to crack the code of making money online are a couple of the more common approaches used by purveyors of really bad business ideas. These pitches will usually be accompanied by pictures of fancy house and cars, possibly even boats at a dock at some exotic island. If the pictures were not gleaned from a travel site, they were most likely staged and the person attempting to separate you from your money sneaked into a high-end neighborhood and staged the pictures without the owner's consent.

Regardless of how good the proposal may seem and how honest the individual appears to present themselves, before signing up wait at least 24 hours before paying your money. Use this time for more research to make sure you are not paying for someone else to earn money on the internet at your expense.

Many business owners brag about their workforce, how good a job they do and how they work side-by-side with the business owner, indicating that the owner must be a great leader because every time they walk into the shop everyone is hard at work. However, the sign of a good leader is not how well everyone works when they are on the floor. Rather, the sign of a good leader is how well their people function when they are not around.

Ethic has often been defined as doing the right thing, even when no one is looking and one of the signs of a good leader is when their employees are doing the right thing, even when the leader is not around and there is no threat of them showing up unexpectedly. Their people understand what the expectations are and what they must do to meet those expectations. Knowing the consequences also helps, but it is more important for the employees to want to do a good job because it will be appreciated, than knowing doing a lousy job will get them fired.

A good business leader sets the example for all of their people and anyone performing any type of tasks for them. Whether they are employees or others in a volunteer organization, most people appreciate having someone they can go to for the times they need help, but also someone who trains them how to perform a specific function and then leaves them alone and let them do what they were trained to do.

Getting a group of employees to perform when they are not around is one of the best examples of a good leader. Managing by intimidation does not work, at least not for very long and most managers using that technique will quickly be replaced, especially after all of the workers protest and walk off the job. For the business owner, this technique will have them spending more time hiring replacement workers than actually teaching anyone.

To many business owners, they honestly believe it will take more time to train someone to do a job that it would take them to do it themselves. They have all, at one time or another, commented that they do not have the time to teach someone, and that it is faster to just do it. While that may be true in a short-sighted kind of way, but taking the time to share their knowledge and then letting someone else do the work, it frees up their time for them to do other things.

If there is any secret to being a good business leader it would be not to simply assign jobs and expect them to be done. At the beginning of a project, they should gather everyone together and form a plan to complete the project. Specific steps with specific timelines to gauge progress should be established. Once the plan has been finalized, the leader walks away and lets the group get it done. If they need help, he is there but if they are part of the planning process they have a vested interest in seeing it completed on time.
